Around fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state early analysis show the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

A senior political figure said the incident rendered him without words and required to be solved quickly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
