The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
