World Series Game 7 Attracts 51M Viewers In the United States, Canadian and Japanese Regions.

The exciting extra-inning clash that saw the Dodgers overcome the Blue Jays 5-4 attracted a total over 50 million viewers across the United States, Canada, and Japanese markets. Major League Baseball stated this is the most-watched Fall Classic finale after the 1991 edition showdown featuring the Twins and Atlanta Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Details

Last Saturday’s epic game drew over 27 million viewers on Fox channels, its Spanish-language channel and Fox’s digital services. According to Nielsen, it was the second highest-rated program of the previous week.

It also is the top-rated World Series matchup after the 2017 Game 7 between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros, which averaged over 29 million. This represents a sixteen percent improvement compared to the previous finale between the Washington Nationals and Astros, which attracted 23.19 million.

In the Nielsen ratings, the sixth game placed 4th, Game 4 ranked 7th, Game 5 was eighth, and the third game finished in 13th place.

International Audience Figures

In the Canadian market, the game drew over 11 million viewers on the Sportsnet network and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This made it the most-watched English program in Canada after the 2010 edition Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In Japan, where the deciding game began at 9 PM local time, it attracted 12 million. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – where Fall Classic Most Valuable Player Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up a single run in six innings – averaged 13.1M spectators, making it the highest-rated World Series matchup on a sole broadcaster in the country.

Overall Averages and Patterns

The full seven-match World Series recorded over 15.7 million viewers on Fox, a 2% rise from last year’s Dodgers versus Yankees matchup. This marks the first time after 2015 and ‘16 that the World Series has recorded viewership growth for two consecutive seasons.

Counting the opening game broadcast on Univision, the total US viewership was 16.1 million. The total Fall Classic average in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1M in Canada.

The complete playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 recorded 8.09M watchers, an eight percent increase compared to last year and Fox’s best playoff performance after 2017.

Major League Baseball stated that the Fall Classic was broadcast in 203 countries and territories by 44 broadcasting partners in sixteen different tongues.
